You can find most of these around your house, or can easily purchase them from any convenience store.

Different Methods of Cleaning Your Air Force 1s

There are several options available to you when you start cleaning your shoes. This of course depends both on what supplies you have on hand as well as how dirty your shoes are i.e., what kind of stains they have on them. For normal dirt levels caused by simple everyday wear like accumulation of dust, mud, etc. A simple soap solution should do the trick. However, if your shoes have yellow stains on them or you’re aiming for a deep clean, you might consider using the baking soda or white vinegar method. We’ll be explaining each of these methods in detail below and you can choose whatever works best for you. But before you go for any of these methods it is a good practice to rub off any excess dirt caked on using a dry brush or patting the shoes against each other. After that, wipe over the shoes with a damp cloth. Lastly, remove the laces from your shoes before you start cleaning them using any of the methods given.       

Soap and Water

This is probably the easiest method to clean any shoes with a leather or rubber surface on the outside.

• Take a small container and fill it up with warm water
• Add a small amount of dish soap or laundry detergent in it and mix well
• Now take an old toothbrush or nail brush and dip the bristles in water
• Gently rub over the shoes with the brush, you can afford to go a little harder over areas where there is more dirt or there seem to be stubborn stains. 
• After rubbing with a brush, always remove excess with a towel
• Repeat the same process for the inside of the shoes
• Once you’re sure they’re clean, fill them up completely with old newspapers, clothes, etc., and leave them out to air dry.

Instead of a brush, you can also use a microfiber cloth and it will also get the job done just as well. While cleaning make sure to focus on the seams between the midsole and the body as a lot of dirt tends to accumulate over there. 

Baking Soda and White Vinegar

This method is best suitable for a spot treatment i.e. if you’re targeting specific, stubborn spots that you want to get rid of.

• Add one tablespoon of baking soda to two tablespoons of vinegar (preferably white vinegar)
• Mix the two ingredients thoroughly until they form a smooth white paste
• Use a brush to apply this paste to the spots you’re targeting and gently rub over them.
• Leave the mix on the surface for five minutes so it can extract any dirt
• After five minutes, take a damp towel and wipe the shoes with it 

The most significant advantage of this technique is that baking soda is a natural odor neutralizer so it’ll not only make your shoes look clean, but also have them smell fresh and nice. 

Toothpaste 

If you don’t have vinegar and baking soda on hand or are simply looking for another alternative, you can use any non-gel, white toothpaste. It works just as well on any stains, dirt, or scuff marks.

Simply apply a little toothpaste over a brush or a microfiber cloth and then rub over the desired area. Make sure to wipe off any excess dirt or debris beforehand with a damp cloth. After you’re sure that you’ve gotten rid of the stains, wipe away the toothpaste with a wet towel or cloth.

Throw them in the Washing Machine

If you’re looking for a solution that does not require much effort on your end, this method is for you. 

• Remove the laces from the shoes
• Put the shoes and the laces in separate mesh bags and place them in the washing machine
• Make sure you either throw them in with a load or place other old clothes, towels, or sheets with the shoes so they don’t rattle around in the empty washing machine
• Use detergent as you normally would and make sure the water is not hot, go for a normal to cold water temperature 
• Set the machine cycle to gentle and turn it on
• Once the shoes are clean, take them out and let them air dry. Do not use the machine dryer as the hot air can damage the glue holding the shoes together and reduce their lifespan
• When air drying the shoes, make sure not to put them directly in the sun or a lot of heat as it will cause the completely wet shoes to shrink in size and may also make them a bit stiff

It is not recommended to do this method frequently and a lot of precautions need to be taken even when using this technique. 

Cleaning the laces

Other than when you use a washing machine to clean shoes, with every other method you have to wash the laces separately. 

Make a soapy solution using water, or any cleaning agent like dish wash, liquid hand wash, etc., and soak the laces in it for approximately 30 minutes. During that time you can clean your shoes. After 30 minutes, take out the laces and use either a nail brush or a toothbrush and gently scrub the laces while they are still wet. Once done, leave the laces out to dry.

A simpler way of cleaning them is to simply toss them in the washing machine with the rest of your clothes. Unlike the shoes themselves, laces can also be dried using the dryer. 

Maintenance Tips to Make Your Shoes Last Longer

To make your shoes look good as new for a long time and increase their lifetime, there are certain measures you can take. 

• Avoid using harsh chemicals or hot water on your shoes as it can damage not just the material of the shoes but also the adhesive holding them together
• Do not put them in the dryer, always air dry them in a cool, shady place
• Use a magic eraser to get rid of minor stains, dirt, etc. if you’re not planning on doing a thorough cleaning 
• Never leave them fully submerged in water as it can later warp the shape of the shoes
• You can remove the creases on the shoes using a flat iron! Simply stuff the shoes with newspapers or old clothes and lift the tongue of the shoes. Place a damp cloth over the area of the crease and then go over it with a flat iron. 
• As mentioned above, you can use baking soda to get rid of the odor on the shoes. Place the shoes in an airtight container, dust them with baking soda, make sure it reaches the inner corners, and then leave for 24 hours.

Hand painted or printed?

There are essentially two different ways artists can customize your Vans. The first way is by hand painting. This is where the artist themself hand paints the design on the shoe with paint, markers, or another artistic medium. If using acrylic paint, the artist usually preps the shoe with a primer so that there’s a thin layer between the shoe and the paint to prevent cracking. If there are negative reviews, is there something consistent people are seeing such as paint chipping, wrong design, or unprofessional customer service? Chad Can’t Color is a website run by someone named Chad who is an extremely talented artist. He offers a wide variety of shoe styles as well as designs! These rose tattoo Vans retail for $235 and are one of my personal favorites.

B Street Shoes is a company run by 4 male artists located in California. They offer over 200 unique designs, with a variety of different shoe styles to choose from. These pastel ombre gradient shoes are absolutely stunning, I might even buy them myself!

Alepel Hand Painted Shoes is a women’s only brand that unfortunately doesn’t offer the Vans, but they do offer other hand painted slip ons. This brand was founded in 2014 and offers a more sophisticated style of shoe. Check out these adorable mule style “Love” slip ons! 

NykeriaShoes uses various cartoons as inspiration for their wide selection of slip ons! These Simpsons inspired shoes have amazing detail and vibrancy to the design. This artist also treats all their shoes with an additional sealant coating that makes them waterproof and dirt resistant.

Cover the parts of your shoes you don’t want any paint over (like the soles) with tape. After this, draw or stencil out your design using either tape (covering in tape and then gradually removing parts you want to paint) or graphite paper. Take your colors and apply thin, even coats of your paints on your shoe. You’ll need 4-5 layers at least, and you need to dry each layer with a heat gun or blow dryer before moving on to the next. Once you’re finished, just apply your 1-2 coats of the finisher to prevent the paint from chipping, and you’re done!

So maybe you’re not that good at detailed painting or applying smooth strokes, but you still want an intricate design with proper attention to detail. Or maybe you want a gradual fade design with a subtle mixing of the colors, nothing too harsh or defined. What do you do then? Airbrushing of course! It’s pretty fun and straightforward to do and requires just a little, one-time investment in an airbrush.

Except for the areas that you want to airbrush over, cover the rest with masking tape and stencil out any areas or defined borders inside of which you’d like to paint. For airbrushing, your paint’s consistency must be just right, not too thick but not too thin either, closer to milk’s consistency. You can use the Angelus 2-Thin mixed with the acrylic paint to achieve it. After getting the desired consistency, pour it in your airbrush and start spraying over your shoes. Don’t rush it; go slowly and try to be as precise as possible. Once the paint dries, remove the tape and apply 1-2 coats of your finisher to bind it all together. Enjoy your new Air Force One kicks!

Airbrushing is usually used when a smooth blending of colors is required, like painting the colors of the sunset, the cosmos, or the ocean.

Hydro Dipping

Method 

In hydro dipping, you’ll be completely submerging your shoes in the water with paint, so you must cover the soles, edges, etc. completely with the tape. After that, spray some primer over it, which will help the paint stick on the sneaker’s surface better. Now fill a tub with water and spray your acrylic spray paints on top in a random fashion. Once a nice, even layer forms, dip your shoes upside-down into the water. Dip them slowly and keep them underwater for a while. Once you take them out, remove the excess paint, let them dry, and then remove the tape. At the end spray your varnish over the shoes to give them a finishing touch.

Ideas

You can use hydro dipping to develop a cool theme on your shoes, like representing ocean waves or a forest.

Or you could go for some completely random, mismatched colors. The results would still be pretty stunning.

Sharpie

Lots of us are used to holding a pen, I mean we’ve been using it to write since we were what 3 or 4? Moreover, who hasn’t done some casual doodling every now and then? Maybe in some boring class or just when you were free and had a pen and paper nearby. Wouldn’t it be great if you could do that on shoes too? Well, now you can! By using sharpies, you could very easily draw anything you want, it can be some little crazy patterns or a proper sketch, whatever you want.

You can either start by drawing a rough sketch of your design over your shoes using a lead pencil, or you can move straight to the sharpies and start drawing your pattern. Studded shoes 

Studs, although not as famous as they once were, are still a favorite of our emo and more punk style people. So let’s dive straight into how you could customize your AF1s with studs.

Supplies

• Metal toothpicks (one thin and one slightly thicker)
• Candle
• Match stick
• Spikes (7x10mm)
• Metal studs

Methods 

Light up your candle and heat the tip of the thinner toothpick over it. Now use this heated toothpick to poke through the holes in the front of your AF1s, you have to thoroughly go through them and widen them a bit. After this use the thicker toothpick to widen the holes further. Once you’ve done this take your studs and pass them through the holes (from the inside out), and twist your spikes around these metal studs until they’re firmly in position and don’t budge. Repeat this process for all the holes and then rock on your now studded AF1’s. For a better understanding of the process do check out SamAlxr’s video explaining just this process.

Getting The Shoes

If you don’t already have some old Converse laying around, we got you covered. We recommend getting the classic Converse shoes since they’re made of high-quality canvas, are easy to paint on, and will last much longer than any other canvas shoes. The Converse Chuck Taylors are a favorite of shoe artists and come in two different styles:

High Tops: These are a great choice if your design is relatively larger and requires a large space; this would give you the blank canvas you need.

Materials

Getting all the right materials is essential to ensure that your efforts are not wasted. In order to properly hand paint your Converse Chuck Taylors, you will need the following:

• Masking/ Painter’s tape: This is to seal off any areas you don’t want to be painted over and for stenciling.
• XACTO knife (optional): To cut off the tape and for stenciling (if you’re using tape to stencil out your design)
• Gesso/ Acrylic paint in white or black (as a primer): You’ll need these to form the base since canvas absorbs a lot of the paint and it’s hard to get the colors to show properly without a proper base. You can get it in white or black depending on the color of your shoes (use white unless the canvas of your Chuck Taylors is black)

• Good Acrylic paints: Get some good quality acrylic paints. You can find more info here and pick what suits your needs best. Some artists prefer to use a half-and-half mixture of Angelus Leather Paint and Angelus 2 soft, which results in a thin mixture that adheres to the canvas material and keeps the fabric flexible, so the paint doesn’t crack easily.

• Acrylic varnish or finisher: to prevent chipping, cracking, and making the paint last longer while looking fresh.
• Pencil/ fine tip micro pen or fine tip marker: to draw outlines of your design.
• Paintbrushes in different sizes: You’ll need at least one small, one medium, and one large-sized brush. You could get either flat-tip or point-tip depending on what you plan on drawing.

Method

No two pairs of shoes are alike. You don’t want to hand paint your Converse Chuck Taylors the same way you’d paint Nike Air Force 1s. Make sure to follow the below steps carefully:

1. First off, remove the laces from your shoes and place them somewhere safe for later.
2. Now tape off the toe caps, the soles, edges, and the tongue of your shoes.
3. Stuff your shoes with rolled-up cloth, shopping bags, or newspapers to keep the outer surfaces elevated. This will give a more comfortable and more smooth surface to work on.
4. Draw a very rough outline of your design on your shoes using a pencil.
5. Spread your primer over the entire area of your design or over your entire shoe if you plan on painting the whole shoe. You’ll need several thin and even coats of the primer to get the perfect base.
6. Once the base has completely dried, draw a more detailed outline of your design on it. You can either freehand your design or transfer it using a tracing paper or graphite paper, as shown in DeJesus Custom Footwear’s video. For a more straightforward design, you can also use painter’s tape to stencil out the design as shown by DeJesus in his YouTube video. 
7. Now that you have an outline, start painting using the most prominent colors or the colors that take up the most space. After this, gradually add more colors on top, making sure that the layer below is completely dry first. You can use a blow dryer if the paint isn’t drying fast enough for your taste.

7. Once you’ve finished painting, let it dry for 24 hours. Once dried, use a good acrylic finisher (matte or glossy) on top to give it a finished look.
8. Remove the tape, add back the laces initially removed, and enjoy your new and improved masterpeice!

The Best Adidas Shoes To Customize 

Before we get into the details on how to customize your Adidas sneakers, we need to make sure you have the right pair. If you don’t already have an old pair laying around, you’ll need to find a pair that are comfortable, fit your personal style, and easy to customize. If you decide to get a brand new pair, here are some shoe designs we’d recommend.

1. Superstar Sneakers: These are one of the company’s newer models and probably the ones that gained popularity the fastest. They’re sleek, comfy, look good with any kind of clothing, and are super easy to style.
2. Stan Smith Sneakers: They’re similar to the Superstar’s when it comes to the build and durability, but in the exterior design, they don’t have the Superstar’s trademark three stripes. This gives a more connected region for you to draw on without any interruption by the stripes.
3. Continental 80: An old classic that has been modified over time to fit in better with the changing fashion trends and is now a loved and highly worn model. If the design you want on your shoes is a bit subtle or you just want some small addition, these are the shoes for you.

Let’s Get Customizing

By this time, you’re probably itching to know about the various techniques you could use to customize your Adidas sneakers. Similar to when customizing Vans shoes, you have a lot of options available to you. Start by asking yourself what kind of design you are going for. Some techniques may be best for little details while others are better for more color. Whatever you are going for, we have put together a list of different techniques, required materials, and methods for each.

Hand Painting

Hand painting your Adidas is probably the most-used process when it comes to personalization. It’s pretty straightforward, involves a paintbrush and different colors, which is always fun, and it gives you complete control over each and every spot, line, and curve on your shoe. Another plus is that it’s incredibly flexible; you can use it for any design, pattern and even substitute many of the products used with things that are more readily available.

Materials

• Prep solution: Angelus Leather Preparer and Deglazer or 100% acetone nail paint remover to get rid of the factory finish.
• Making or Electrical tape
• Acrylic paints or Leather paints from Angelus Direct 
• Cotton balls
• Paintbrushes of different sizes
• Acrylic finisher or varnisher
• A heat gun or blow dryer
• Lead pencil and transfer paper/graphite paper 

Method 

Soak your cotton balls in a little prep solution and rub them over your shoes to remove the factory paint. Now draw your design over your shoes; you can either freehand it or use a transfer paper to trace it over your shoes. Once transferred, use a small, point-tip brush and start painting the borders. Use a wider brush for the larger inner areas and background. You’ll need 4-5 thin, even coats with proper drying time in between. At the end, when the paint is completely dry, add 1-2 coatings of your acrylic finisher to bind everything and make the paint last longer. And you’re all done!

Ideas

You could use this method to paint your favorite characters on your shoes like this. 

Or you could paint a simple pattern or some cute, small stuff like flowers, etc.

Air Brushing 

Not too sure about your painting skills? Want some equipment that would get the job done correctly and give your shoes an industrial look? A fan of spray paint? Or maybe your motif isn’t something that’s too defined and involves a subtle mixing of different colored paints. If any of these fits your case, airbrushing is the perfect method for you! 

Materials

• Prep Solution: You’ll need this to prepare the shoe by removing the factor finish and making the surface more compatible with the paint i.e., so that the paint sticks better. You can use Angelus Leather preparer and deglazer for this or 100% acetone nail paint remover
• Airbrush 
• Small cotton pads
• Masking/Electrical tape 
• A print out of your design (this is important for stenciling)
• XACTo knife or any sharp blade 
• Acrylic paints or Angelus’ leather paints
• Brush cleaner: To clean the brush when changing colors or when ending
• Thinning solution: Distilled water or Airbrush reducer/improver or Angelus 2-thin
• Acrylic Finisher 
• A blow dryer or heat gun  

Method 

Like for hand painting, first use the prep solution to remove old paint. Now use your printout and tape to create a stencil over your shoe. Its best to start from the outside, do those bits, and then cut out the inner parts, cover the inner parts and brush over. For a detailed stenciling video, check out Jake Mata’s video with Angelus shoe polish that focuses on this topic. 

For the paint solution that you’ll pour in the airbrush, you’ll need milk-like consistency of your solution. To achieve this, mix 50% paint with 50% of the thinner; percentages may vary slightly depending on your exact materials, but usually this would be perfect. Use this with the airbrush and spray over the designated areas. Get 4-5 even layers and go slowly, once dry, add 1-2 coats of the varnish.  

Ideas

Airbrushing is usually used for a soft blend of colors so that they look melted into each other naturally rather than have sharp boundaries.

But with proper stenciling, you can also use it for smaller designs.

Hydro Dipping

If you’re looking for something super fun that doesn’t involve too much effort or requires a lot of precision, you should totally look into hydro dipping your shoes. Hydro dipping has been made popular when it comes to creating custom Air Force 1s, however, it can be used on Adidas as well. It is a great way to incorporate your favorite colors and add a groovy vibe to your kicks.

Materials

• A large tub or container
• Masking tape 
• A sharp blade that can cut the tape
• Bonding Primer (A spray that will help the paint stick to the surface): You can get one from Rustoleum
• Acrylic spray paints  

Method 

Take the laces off your shoes and carefully tape all the parts of your shoes you don’t want any paint over, like the tongue, toe cap, the side stripes, soles, edges, etc. Now spray a generous layer of primer over your shoes. After this, fill a tub with water and spray several layers of your paints on top, you can paint them on top of each other or go in lines, just create a random, large pattern that can completely envelop your shoes. Now dip your shoes, upside down into this water. Do this slowly and hold for a while. In the end, just take them out, let them dry, remove the tape, and enjoy!

Or you could go for something darker, like the galaxy or night sky.

Sharpie

Almost all of us have used Sharpies to doodle on an old pair of shoes. This same technique used to customize your old Vans can be used on your Adidas as well. Customizing shoes couldn’t be easier than it is with Sharpies, it’s the same as drawing on paper, and you can enact some pretty intricate designs. The best part is that they’re waterproof! No worries about them washing off or bleeding on the cloth with water. 

Materials

• Oil-based sharpie

Method 

With sharpies, it’s just like doodling; grab a marker and let your hand move around freely. Or, you could go for some specific drawings. Either way, all you have to do is take your sharpie and use it like any other marker on paper, except this will be on shoes.  

Ideas

Like Hoodie Jordan, you can use several different colors and give a bright, rainbow look to your shoes.

Or, like RALPH CIFRA, you could use one color and draw some wild art with it. You can also add shadings using lighter tones of the same colors.

Bedazzle With Crystals

The glitz and glamour of anything that shines is quite attractive and gives a very fancy vibe, upgrading even the simplest of things into something illustrious and alluring. Now, Adidas is in no way simple, but what if you adorned them with some crystals? Definitely something special.

Materials

• E6000 glue or any industrial adhesive
• Rhinestones or Swarovski crystals in different sizes
• Tweezers or a Crystal Applicator  

Method 

First of all, decide which areas you want crystals over. Once chosen, start applying glue on small sections of that area and then place the crystals on top using a tweezer or the applicator. Try not to get any glue on the crystals and use different sizes depending on which ones fit best in which parts, as Carli Bybel has demonstrated in her video. Let the glue dry, and your shoes are ready to wear.

Ideas

With crystals, there are a variety of options available depending on the kinds of stones you get.

Studded

Studs give a strong, metallic, and a little rocky look to your shoes. So, if you’re a metal or rock and roll fan or want a chic, street style aesthetic, studs are the way to go. 

Materials

• E6000 glue or some very strong adhesive 
• Studs (of your choice)

Method 

Adding studs is precisely like that of crystals, apply glue, and then carefully place studs on tops. For Adidas, we would suggest using studs of smaller size and broader base that would easily stick to the surface and would not fall off with a little rubbing or flexing.

You could place crystals over some parts of your shoes, like shown below. 

Or you could have small studs covering your entire shoes.

Add sealant when you first get them.

While most acrylic paints are water-resistant, some are not, and being water-resistant does not mean that they are waterproof. Water-resistant paints are still prone to damage if they come in contact with a little water such as rain. To bind the paint to the surface and provide it an external protective layer, seal the paint using any acrylic finisher. There are different kinds of finishes available in the market, like matte, glossy, shiny, etc. Get any good quality finisher of your choice and apply 2-3 thin, even coats of it over your shoes. It’ll help with the following things:

• Protection from moisture: Paint sealers form a thin layer over your paint that keeps the moisture out (i.e., doesn’t make any direct contact with the paint).
• Prevents cracking: Acrylic paints have a tendency of peeling off or cracking when the shoes are worn, sealer will help prevent that.
• Protects from dirt: The thin layer that stands between moisture/water and paint also ensures that no dirt, sand, etc. ruins your paint.  
• Easier to clean later: A major advantage of sealer is that it provides a smooth surface that is easier to clean and less prone to any damage resulting from using soap, foam, or water for cleaning your shoes.

Depending on your shoes’ material, you can get a sealer made specifically for that material like canvas or leather, which would be more effective than a general sealer. Two of the frequently used sealers are from Mod Podge, which you can order on Amazon, or Angelus Acrylic Finisher, which again you can order from their online store. Both are available in different finish styles like matte, glossy, etc.

General guidelines to take care of your shoes.

You must take extra precautions with your custom shoes and are careful in the way you wear them. You could lookout for some simple things, which would ensure that your kicks keep rocking for a long while.

• Do not wash your shoes! Although you could easily put any pair of Vans in the washing machine, do not do that with hand-painted canvas Vans. This could cause the paint may chip or crack (the same goes with your hand-painted Nike AF1s too! And just about any pair you own with paint on them).
• Keep your shoes out of direct sunlight, especially for longer periods of time. Direct sunlight may lead to the paint cracking and make it look dry and saturated.
• Avoid putting your shoes in any place with moisture or excessive humidity.
• Like humans, shoes need to breathe too! Store them in a dry and aerated place with very little humidity.
• Don’t wear your shoes outside when there is rain, or it has been raining recently, leaving puddles, etc. Also, avoid wearing your shoes when going for some strenuous physical activity or when you know you’ll be out for a long time.
• When applying a sealer, move in the direction of the shoes’ creases, like the toe box or the midsoles. Make sure to give special attention to these areas. 

Whatever shoe you have (Vans, Nikes, Adidas, etc.), these are some surefire tips to maintain their look for quite some time.

Cleaning products and their usage.

There are multiple ways you can go about cleaning your shoes. The technique you choose depends on the material they’re made of and how dirty they are. There are different products for different levels of cleaning. Some of the most popular cleaning products used to clean painted shoes are listed below. Before you use any of these, though, make sure they’re compatible with the material of your shoes. Also, wipe out any excess dirt using a slightly damp cloth before moving on to deep cleaning.

Foaming Cleanser

This is probably the best way to get rid of all the dirt while avoiding damage to your shoe in the process. Certain foaming cleansers are manufactured just for shoes. Spray that on your shoe, use a brush with firm bristles and scrub over the foam to cover each spot and bring out the dirt. After that, just wipe the foam off using a towel.

Detergent and water mix

If you don’t have a foaming cleanser, you can use a good quality detergent. Mix it in some water and then use a shoe brush to lather it over your shoes. Again, rub over all the stains or dirty spots, then wipe off the lathered foam using a cloth or towel.

Baking soda/water mix

Not sure if your detergent is of the right quality? Substitute it with baking soda. Make a baking soda and water paste to apply over the stains. Leave for 15-20 mins, scrub with a brush, and then wipe off with a damp cloth.

Angelus easy cleaner

Angelus easy cleaner is a go-to when you want deep cleaning and is perfect since it works on almost any material you could think of. Just pour some of it in a bowl, dip your scrubbing brush in the bowl and start rubbing over your shoe. Once you’re done, use a microfiber towel to wipe away the excess, and you’re done!
